Mason - A Girl Like Me [GSR182] [Great Stuff Recordings]

Amsterdam's Mason are an ever-moving target. Eternally eclectic, every new release they put out is like a mysterious present, waiting to be opened. Their latest, a resolutely dancefloor-focused slice of classically-styled house is here: A Girl Like Me. It's a track that takes things back to basics, propelled by a plump, moist acid house bassline and similarly retro snare fills. A seductive chord stab melody with plenty of groove in its rhythm forms the crux of the matter, along with a pitched-down, incredibly catchy vocal hook. The mood is feel-good, an irresistible blend of late '80s / early '90s dance pop and contemporary methods of heightening energy. If Inner City, Tensnake and Hercules & Love Affair got together, the results wouldn't be too far removed from this anthem. Brazilian party-starter Joyce Muniz smells the acid a mile away and comes running head first towards the track for her remix. She opts for a classy, timeless deep house work out, taking the original down to a more demure simmer, the chords put to particularly luscious use and combined with Kerri Chandler-esque muted stabs to great effect. Warm, lazy bass and gentle melodies make for a gorgeous, hazy ride. Rising stars Tagteam Terror hone in on the tech stabs and ramp them up to 11, pulling the bassline down lower and going for a classic house sound percussion-wise. It's like the original taken down a slightly more sinister route, and it packs a real punch as a result.
